Why have I invited this sadness into my life?

It’s the most gorgeous sunny day in London, so I could only bring myself to sit through the second half of Spurs v. West Ham (remember, I am taking this slowly). But I saw the part where the West Ham lost, which was the important bit, because it made me feel really dejected.

‘Why have I invited this sadness into my life?’ I said to Jodie as I slumped in my seat and James (a real fan, a lifelong fan) frowned. ‘The amazing thing is that even if I wanted to change now to say that I like Spurs, I couldn’t - somehow after only a week and half I’m committed. It’s like when you start going out with someone and after ten days something goes wrong - sometimes you’re already in deep enough by then that it’s too late, it really hurts.’

‘Let’s go eat ice cream,’ Jodie said.

Interesting (but not surprising, of course) that football makes the most sense to me when I draw parallels between it and love.
